Major projects home assessment

£2,000 to £3,000

An architect-led detailed condition survey, retrofit assessment and Passivhaus Planning Package modelling exercise, offering a complete understanding of your home's energy performance and providing the basis for a roadmap to achieve a high standard of retrofit.

What to expect

  • Project Brief Questionnaire.
  • 30-60 minute meeting with RIBA Chartered Architect.
  • Retrofit Condition Survey - Detailed survey of existing building condition, recording construction build ups, condition and remedial work where necessary. Consideration is also given to what retrofit measures are appropriate for each element of the building.
  • Retrofit Risk Assessment - Recommendations are made for further investigations or survey work.
  • PHPP modelling - Modelling the existing building in PHPP to generate a 'base case' and then testing 2-3 Retrofit Options to see what is feasible. This usually aims for AECB Carbonlite Retrofit Standard and Passivhaus EnerPHit standard, but there may be limitations picked up within the Condition Survey that mean these are not achievable. In this case % improvements may be recommended.
  • Outline specification for measures to achieve the given standards. To include a high level evaluation of impact on disruption and cost.
  • Overheating Risk quantified and recommendations for mitigation provided as appropriate.
  • Recommended next steps.

Who this assessment is suitable for

This approach is best suited for people aiming to carry out a ‘whole house’ retrofit, particularly where certification is of interest. PHPP (the Passivhaus Planning Package) is used to model energy savings as accurately as possible, helping to make informed decisions about specification and performance.

Using the Passivhaus methodology  helps to build in quality and eliminate the ‘performance gap’, whether the project is certified (AECB/Passivhaus) or not. Whole house retrofits are typically achievable from a budget of £150k upwards, though this does not all have to be carried out at once.

About the provider

Progress in Practice is an RIBA-chartered architecture studio specialising in Passivhaus design and low-energy retrofits. The practice has delivered certified retrofit projects across the Northwest, including to the Passivhaus EnerPHit and AECB CarbonLite Retrofit standards.

With a team of qualified architects and an in-house Retrofit Coordinator, AECB Certifier, and Passivhaus Designers, their approach seamlessly integrates sensitive architectural design with rigorous building physics.
